Develop, Multiply

Episode 17: Multiplication in Miami – Reaching Commuters

Gus Hernandez shares his story of starting from scratch on a Miami campus. Hear how his hybrid church/campus role, “portable church” method, and emphasis on student leadership have led to a rapidly multiplying ministry at a university made up of 95% commuter students.

Notable Points:

  • The first thing to do in a new ministry context is “decode the campus” At FIU, out of 50,000 students over 47,000 are commuters who don’t live on campus.
  • Follow up is key. Any time you host an event, collect data and contact info in order to be able to meet with students 1-on-1. Many of these lead to gospel conversations.
  • Have clear “next steps” defined for students who visit your ministry.
  • “If you make disciples, you always get the church.” – Building a Discipling Culture.
  • Start groups that start groups. The fastest way to multiply small groups is through giving leadership away to students.
