Episode 88: Porn Part 1 – Porn is Not the Problem

In this episode, Mitch Tidwell returns to the Collective podcast to talk more about pornography, the grip it has on college students, and strategies for helping them break free. Mitch first appeared in Episode 70, in what has been one of our most popular episodes. Now he’s back by popular demand for a two-part series, where we’ll get very practical about dealing with porn.

Notable Points:

  • An addiction to pornography is an external alarm bell that there is something deeper internally going on. Behavior modification can work for a short time, but if the heart-issue is left unaddressed, destructive patterns will eventually resurface.
  • Porn is the “what.” We have to figure out the “why.”
  • Seven longings of the heart that we are trying to fill: Attention. Affection. Affirmation. Acceptance. Satisfaction. Significance. Security.
  • “The road you lead someone down to help them recover from a porn addiction must lead to the Cross of Christ and a risen Savior.” Help students see that Jesus satisfies the longing they are trying to fill.
  • Be sure to check out next week’s episode for Mitch’s step-by-step approach to helping students break free from addiction to porn.
